Matrix Medical Network Achieves Recertification for NCQA Credentialing Accreditation
Matrix Medical Network Achieves Recertification for NCQA Accreditation
Company achieves the highest level awarded for credentialing and recredentialing
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., July 16, 2020 – Matrix Medical Network (Matrix), a clinical leader in supporting the needs of at-risk populations, has achieved the highest level for credentialing and recredentialing from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The much-coveted accreditation is valid until 2023. It allows Matrix health plan clients to continue to fully delegate all of their credentialing responsibilities to Matrix and eliminate any need to provide credentialing oversight for the Matrix nurse practitioners who see their members.
“Achieving NCQA recertification is an important achievement for both Matrix and our clients,” said Keith Henthorne, Matrix Chairman and CEO. “It validates that our credentialing processes meet or exceed the industry’s highest quality standards and instills confidence in the services we provide.”
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requires that companies review and verify a clinician’s training, experience, practice history and license. This process, known as credentialing, is completed initially when a clinician is hired and then at regular intervals thereafter. NCQA’s Credentialing/Recredentialing program evaluates organizations that help health plans make sure providers have proper credentials.
This is important because encounters with Matrix’s qualified healthcare professionals can be much more than health assessments for risk adjustment. Comprehensive health assessments and quality visits ensure members’ and employees’ ongoing safety and well-being, which in turn improve outcomes and lower costs from a population health management standpoint.
Partnering with a clinical services organization that can ensure the availability of credentialed clinicians is critical to protecting entire populations from acute and chronic issues, while reducing costs and legal exposure. Matrix has an established national network of clinicians across the country and credentials approximately 120 clinicians each month. As part of the ongoing certification process, NCQA will audit Matrix triennially. NCQA’s Credentialing Accreditation focuses on consumer protection and customer service improvement. It provides a framework for organizations to implement industry best practices that help them accurately and efficiently credential and recredential healthcare professionals.
“Achieving NCQA Credentialing Accreditation demonstrates that Matrix Medical Network has the systems, process and personnel in place to conduct credentialing with the strictest quality standards,” said Margaret E. O’Kane, President, NCQA.
About NCQA
NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations. It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performance. NCQA’s Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) is the most widely used performance measurement tool in health care. NCQA’s website (ncqa.org) contains information to help consumers, employers and others make more informed healthcare choices. NCQA can be found online at ncqa.org, on Twitter @ncqa, on Facebook at facebook.com/NCQA.org/ and on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/company/ncqa.

Matrix Medical Network Becomes Level 5 Member of the American Telemedicine Association
Matrix Medical Network Becomes Level 5 Member of the American Telemedicine Association
Membership further enhances company’s leadership role in enabling telehealth for risk adjustment and comprehensive health assessments
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (July 7, 2020) – In keeping with its commitment to ensuring telehealth continues to move forward as an option for risk adjustment and comprehensive health assessments (CHAs), Matrix Medical Network today announced it has become a Level 5 Member of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA).
Matrix has been at the forefront of creating and delivering innovative telehealth solutions to ensure health plans and their members continue to receive the services they need despite social distancing requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company is hopeful that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will make the telehealth waivers issued on April 10 part of the permanent infrastructure. With its advocacy for public policy changes as well as the industry adoption of technology-enabled virtual care, Matrix views the ATA as the ideal partner to advance this cause.
“Since CMS first issued its guidance expanding the use of telehealth, we have completed thousands of virtual visits,” said Dr. Dan Meltzer, senior vice president, clinical improvement at Matrix Medical Network. “This solution allows us to expand access to care, make health management easier for members and ultimately improve the efficiency of the healthcare delivery network. Telehealth has now become an essential part of our overall member outreach strategies aimed to maximize member engagement.”
Matrix is focused on helping health plans and employers overcome barriers to care, whether at home or at work, through a network of more than 3,000 clinicians across the U.S. as well as a fleet of mobile health clinics. Its clinical excellence, as manifested by its breadth of clinical services, not only help uncover health issues for accurate risk adjustment but also ensure members’ and employees’ ongoing safety and well-being. Matrix’s use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and similar systems harnesses the large amounts of data collected through in-home, mobile clinic, worksite and virtual visits to help health plans and employers drive better clinical and business decisions through predictive analytics while enabling them to be proactive rather than reactive to health issues.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has been an incredible proving ground for telehealth,” said Ann Mond Johnson, CEO of ATA. “Healthcare organizations that were previously reluctant to adopt it have now discovered how effective it is overall, and how telehealth can be inserted into their operations seamlessly for many applications. Now the goal is to ensure we don’t lose the gains we’ve made. Matrix and the ATA are very closely aligned in our views regarding the value of telehealth and its potential to impact health outcomes for patients/members as well as healthcare costs. We welcome Matrix as our newest Level 5 member and look forward to working with their team.”
About the ATA
As the only organization completely focused on advancing telehealth, the ATA is committed to ensuring that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and appropriate care when and where they need it, enabling the system to do more good for more people. ATA represents a broad and inclusive member network of health care delivery systems, technology solution providers and payers, as well as partner organizations and alliances, working to advance industry adoption of telehealth, promote responsible policy, advocate for government and market normalization, and provide education and resources to help integrate virtual care into emerging value-based delivery models. Company continues implementing measures to ensure the health and safety of its team members
SPRINGDALE, Ark., April 30, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) is partnering with Matrix Medical Network (Matrix), a leading clinical services company, to help ensure the safety and health of their team members and contractors as the company begins to reopen some facilities. Matrix operates a network of locally based clinical providers and a fleet of mobile health clinics to provide community-based services with advanced diagnostic capabilities and enhanced care options.
When Tyson Foods begins to reopen idled facilities, it will be with the support of Matrix to further help protect the people who work in Tyson facilities, creating additional healthcare access when it comes to their individual health needs.
Matrix will provide the following at select facilities:
- Diagnostic (PCR) testing of team members for COVID-19
- Daily on-site clinical screening support at Tyson facilities to help ensure a safe working environment
- Assistance with the environmental design of Tyson facilities to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 spread
- Team member access to nurse practitioner care with access onsite or through a mobile health clinic
- Employee education and support for personal health goals or concerns
“Tyson is committed to implementing all possible measures to protect our team members,” said Hector Gonzalez, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Tyson Foods. “We want to reopen our previously idled facilities, but also want to instill confidence in our workers and reassure them that we care deeply about their individual health needs. Our partnership with Matrix Medical Network will allow us to take additional precautions to help keep our employees safe.”
We are deploying medical clinics at a number of Tyson facilities around the U.S. Additionally, the first deployment of mobile medical clinics will be on-site at Tyson Foods facilities in Louisa County, Iowa; Waterloo, Iowa; Logansport, Indiana; and Pasco, Washington, and several other locations to be determined. Additional medical clinics and mobile medical clinics will be deployed at Tyson facilities as needed.
“It’s a critically important time for us to come together to ensure each other’s health, safety, and stability,” said Dr. Daniel Castillo, Chief Medical Officer for Matrix Medical Network. “As the largest food company in the U.S., Tyson’s top priorities include protecting the health and safety of its workers, while also making sure America’s families have food to eat. At Matrix, our services are structured to provide an extra benefit that can bring peace-of-mind to Tyson team members as they return to work.”
Tyson Foods formed a coronavirus task force in January and has implemented numerous measures to protect workers. The company’s efforts have included:
- Taking worker temperatures and installing more than 150 infrared walkthrough temperature scanners in its facilities.
- Requiring and supplying facial protection.
- Widespread hand sanitizer stations.
- Implementing social distancing measures, such as installing workstation dividers, providing more breakroom space, erecting outdoor tents for additional space for breaks where possible, and staggering start times to avoid large gatherings as team members enter the facility.
- Relaxing its attendance policy to encourage workers to stay at home when they’re sick and eliminating the waiting period for eligibility on short-term disability benefits, so workers can receive pay while they’re sick with the flu or COVID-19.
- Increasing short-term disability coverage to 90% of normal pay until June 30, 2020, for team members who are unable to work due to illness, as another way of encouraging team members to stay home when they are sick.

Matrix Medical Network Launches Targeted Telehealth Visits
Matrix Medical Network Launches Targeted Telehealth Visits
Clinical services organization deploys virtual visits to allow maximum reach to engage and
access health plan members around the country
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (April 3, 2020) – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the entire U.S. population on some level, people at highest risk are older Americans and those with multiple chronic conditions. With states implementing stay-at-home orders and the likelihood of seclusion extended into the foreseeable future, Matrix Medical Network (Matrix) announced today that it has launched telehealth visits to help health plan members across the country to prepare and cope during the pandemic.
Knowing that these members have now been urged not to leave their homes, or to have visitors that might put them at greater risk, Matrix now offers the ability for its healthcare providers to visit with health plan members virtually.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for this type of service; we’ve answered the call from many of our clients on a need to find alternative ways to support their members,” said Keith Henthorne, Chairman and CEO of Matrix. “Until the time when in-home visits can resume, telehealth visits offer an opportunity to connect with health plan members who need our help, allowing us to address member COVID-19 concerns while completing a comprehensive health assessment.”
Matrix has implemented a targeted program that uses its proven clinical excellence to help members not only identify the signs and symptoms of COVID-19, but to address concerns about their care and well-being. That includes ensuring they have taken the steps to secure a sufficient supply of their medications, learning coping strategies for loneliness and depression, and helping them initiate and navigate the necessary care management and community referrals that are available to help them access health services, food and supplies in this time of need. Additionally, Matrix providers can connect members with the resources and benefits that are readily accessible from their health plan. Now more than ever, Matrix is helping this population get informed about safe practices and ensure they become active in protecting their health during these difficult times.
“In light of this national crisis, telehealth capabilities quickly rose to the top as a capability we needed to provide to ensure member well-being while serving the needs of our clients,” said Ian Worden, Chief Information Officer for Matrix. “Our teams came together quickly to enable real-time, secure audio and video communication in combination with our proprietary clinical platform allowing our providers to address COVID-19 concerns as part of completing this essential virtual visit.”
In these unprecedented times, health plans now have the ability to deliver an invaluable and convenient virtual experience to their members. Additionally, Matrix continues to seek ways to bring value to the members and communities it serves, while coordinating with its health plan and health system clients, to ensure the safety of its providers and members across the country.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released a memorandum on the Health Plan Management System (HPMS) pertaining to COVID-19 and the use of telehealth. Additionally, under the 1135 waiver authority and the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act, CMS expanded the use of telehealth and encouraged its application where possible.

Matrix Medical Network’s In-Home Visits Help High Risk Seniors Stay Informed and Safer During COVID-19 Pandemic
Matrix Medical Network's In-Home Visits Help High Risk Seniors Stay Informed and Safer During COVID-19 Pandemic
Clinical services organization deploys nationwide network of providers to visit with hard-to-reach populations, armed with screening tools to keep both the provider and member safe.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (March 18, 2020) – While the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the entire U.S. population at some level, people at highest risk are older Americans and those with multiple chronic conditions (source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Knowing that these are also the most difficult health plan members to reach, Matrix Medical Network (Matrix) has implemented a targeted COVID-19 program that uses its proven clinical excellence to balance the social isolation that vulnerable seniors may be feeling during the pandemic. Now more than ever, Matrix nurse practitioners (NPs) are helping this population become informed about safe practices and ensure they become active in protecting their health during these difficult times.
“Much of the information coming from government and healthcare sources is being delivered and shared online,” said Laura Jonsson, senior vice president of clinical services at Matrix. “Yet older Americans, currently considered to be the highest-risk population, often get their information from television, radio and newspapers so they may be missing vital steps to protect themselves. By going into their homes and sitting with them face-to-face, our NPs not only deliver important information and ensure members understand what to do to avoid acquiring the virus, they can also look around the home to make sure members have adequate food and medical supplies, uncover any social determinants of health issues that might put them at greater risk and generally ensure they’re prepared to follow the CDC’s guidelines.”
The key to success is Matrix’s 3,000+ licensed NPs who are dedicated to bringing care and compassion to the individuals they see every day despite working now in very uncertain times. The NPs visit with members in the safety and comfort of their own homes while building a trusted relationship with them. These relationships will enable them to bring vital accurate information to many in the high-risk group. It also avoids the need to seek this information by visiting a potential high-contagion area such as their primary care physician’s office. Matrix is committed to screening practices that help ensure the safety of the members they see every day as well as their own providers.
Although anyone is susceptible to acquiring COVID-19, early data showed higher death rates for people in their 60s, 70s and 80s (source: Bloomberg). According to the CDC, seniors are most susceptible because 85% of adults over the age of 65 have at least one chronic condition such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes, which exacerbates the effects of COVID-19 by creating medical complications. Seniors who are not receiving care in a skilled nursing facility (SNF), assisted living community or other group situation are often socially isolated as well, which means if they have been exposed to COVID-19 they may not have quick access to care.
“The Internet is filled with all types of misinformation, and even if members didn’t see it directly themselves, it may have been passed along to them through email or a well-meaning friend or family member,” Jonsson said. “We try to make sure that by the time the visit is over members understand what to do as well as what not to do so they can remain safe in their homes until the danger has passed.”
Another target for Matrix’s COVID-19 program are dual-eligibles – members whose healthcare expenses are covered under both Medicare and Medicaid.
“Many in the dual-eligible population don’t have Wi-Fi or mobile phones, so their access to up-to-date information is very limited,” Jonsson said. “With so much changing day-to-day we try to ensure that they understand what is happening now so they don’t panic or accidentally put themselves in harmful situations.”
The COIVID-19 situation continues to be very fluid. As such Matrix continues to seek ways to bring value to the members and communities they serve, while coordinating with its health plan and health system clients, as well as local, state and federal public health authorities to ensure the safety of its corporate staff, providers and members across the country.

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, January 21, 2020 – Matrix Medical Network, a leading provider of in-home and mobile health clinic assessments and care management, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, which delivers health care coverage across upstate New York, have partnered to provide a state-of-the-art mobile health clinic (MHC) to ensure that members have even greater choice and convenience in accessing important care and preventive services.
“Many of our screenings can detect disease, diagnose conditions before they become advanced, and help people live longer and healthier lives,” said Dr. Daniel J. Castillo, Matrix chief medical officer. “We are excited to have one of our mobile health clinics on the road in upstate New York and we are very proud of our ability to improve access of care to Excellus BCBS members and help improve their lives.”
Eligible Excellus BCBS members can receive preventive diabetes screenings such as a dilated retinal exam, as well as colorectal screening and mammography. Eligible Medicare members can also receive bone density screening. Appointments will be scheduled only for members with gaps in care based on nationally recognized preventive services guidelines.
To assist Medicare and Medicaid members who haven’t had their preventive screenings, Excellus BCBS is inviting those members by mail to make an appointment and visit the mobile health clinic, which will be at prominent locations in the neighborhoods where these members live. During December, the mobile health clinic staff saw members in New York’s Monroe, Onondaga, Oneida and Broome counties. The program continues into 2020.
“Closing the gaps in care related to preventive screenings is an ongoing challenge for some members and that makes it an ongoing challenge for their doctors and their health insurer too,” said Dr. Brian Steele, Excellus BCBS chief medical director for Safety Net products.
“The goal is to work in partnership with the member’s physician to help the member receive the preventive services they need,” said Dr. Steele. “We want all of our members to stay healthy.”
